The Chinle formation on the desert in northern Arizona gets it color from ancient minerals in the soil. Petrified wood, fossils, dinosaur footprints all inhabit the mounds of sand and earth, layers upon layers built up over thousands of years. On this day the fan of cirrus clouds in the sky reflected the fan of water carved trenches that is formed naturally by the rain and wind in the hills of the Chinle.
